The World Blood Donor Day is being commemorated today (Tuesday) across the world to raise awareness of the need of safe blood and thank volunteer blood donors who gift their blood to save precious lives. Theme for the World Blood Donor Day 2011 is “More blood: More life” while purpose of the theme is to urge more people all over the world to help save lives by volunteering to donate blood regularly. The World Blood Donor Day is being hosted by Argentina this year. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced a campaign “Paint the World Red” on eve of the day and symbolically colouring, covering or lighting monuments, popular landmarks and buildings in red, staging artistic, cultural or musical events with a red-coloured theme or forming a ‘human blood drop’ in prominent public places are planned for creating awareness amongst communities about the need for blood.
According to statistics available with the WHO, 92 million units of bloods are donated annually worldwide. Amongst donors, 45 percent are youngsters below the age of 25 years while the ration of female donors is 40 percent. In Lahore, different blood donor societies will hold walks and establish blood collection camps to commemorate the day. The Services Hospital Patient Welfare Society (SPWS), in coordination with blood donating societies of various universities, Nestle and Marhaba Foods is arranging a blood donation camp in auditorium of Services Hospital.
Atif Ali, SPWS coordinator and a medical student told Pakistan Today that the blood collected in the camp will be donated for thalassemia patients at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The SUNDAS Foundation has also arranged a camp in its office and will hold a walk for awareness about the need of safe blood. Different groups are working for the blood donation cause in the city. People from different hospitals contact students of universities for blood while organisations have arranged blood donating camps to collect blood donations.
Maria Naqvi, member of a group ‘Need for Blood’ said that their group has four zonal divisions in Lahore and each zone provides donors for patients in hospitals that come in its precincts. “There are many groups working for this cause but all are scattered, we have tried to collect a database of all these organisations,” she added. Several online portals are also active to provide services to patients in arranging the required group of blood without cost.
Doctors advise people with good health to donate blood after four to five months. Dr Ziaullah Bangash said that donating blood regularly keeps the body’s blood production unit-bone marrow to work properly and the process helps refresh blood. He said that an increased level of iron in the blood might cause heart diseases but with blood donation, the iron level remains normal. “Regularly donating blood reduces the chance of a heart attack to one third,” he added.
