At least 34 people were killed and another 94 injured when two simultaneous bomb blasts tore open a crowded super market in Peshawar late on Saturday.
The toll was confirmed by the chief executive of the Lady Reading Hospital, the top public healthcare faculty in the provincial metropolis.
He said the injured included journalists and police officials, inducing a superintendent of police.
The blast took place close to the Khyber Super Market, which is surrounded by residential flats for students, shops, a fruit juices kiosk and a hotel. Media reports said the bombs had attached to motorcycles parked close to the market.
A private TV channel reported that the explosion came as a gas cylinder in the area exploded. As people gathered around the site to find out what was happening, the second, more powerful blast occurred, inflicting heavy damage.
The second blast was caused by an improvised-explosives device (IED) attached to a motorcycle parked in the area.
The TV channel had earlier put the toll at twelve and the inured at 40, but Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain later said at least 28 people had been killed.
He said emergency had been imposed at all government hospitals across Peshawar, as the condition of several injured people was critical.
Senior police officer Ijaz Khan said the explosion came just four minutes apart.
“The first blast was quite small, but as people gathered close to the site of the explosion, the second one, which was a real big one, went off,” he said.
The latest violence came hours after visiting Afghan President Hamid Karzai called on Pakistan to eradicate militant sanctuaries at “detailed” talks about a peace process with the Taliban that inaugurated a joint peace commission.
Meanwhile, an explosion was also reported outside the office of a private radio station in Charsadda, but details of the casualties or the damage caused by the explosion were not available by the time this report was filed.
