Amid brewing controversy that the federal government thwarted a planned meeting between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif in Raiwind, the Afghan president on Saturday telephoned Nawaz and invited him to Afghanistan.

Both exchanged pleasantries and good wishes for the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Nawaz Sharif thanked Karzai for making the courtesy call According to sources in Raiwind, despite clearance from the Foreign Office, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari caused the cancellation of Nawaz-Karzai meeting on political grounds.

However, during a joint press conference, Karzai clarified y saying that he could not meet Nawaz on account of tight schedule. Meanwhile, Gilani said Nawaz was invited to the state dinner hosted by President Zardari in honour of his Afghan counterpart. But sources revealed that Nawaz excused himself from attending the function.
