A senior Indian journalist, working with Mid Day, was shot dead on Saturday by unidentified persons in Mumbai. According to Indian media reports, the incident occurred in suburban Powai area of the city. The assailants reportedly shot Jyotirmoy Dey outside his residence. The victim was rushed to Hiranandani hospital where he was declared dead.

According to hospital’s sources, the victim sustained five bullets. The deceased used to cover crime and underworld reports for the newspaper. Reacting to the incident, Maharashtra PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said the attack had put him in shock.

It appeared the underworld was behind the incident, he added. “His killing shows that it was a well-planned attack by the underworld,” Bhujbal said. According to police, four people riding on two bikes fired at Dey and later escaped from the spot.
