Punjab earmarks Rs 52.7b for police

The Punjab government has allocated Rs 52.788 billion for the police department with an additional allocation of Rs 3. 074 billion under the head of non-development budget estimates for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2011-12 which represents an increase of 6.2 per cent over the previous year.

The Punjab Police had received Rs 49.714 billion for the year 2010-11 which rose to Rs 52 billion after revised estimates.
Moreover, the provincial government has approved only two new schemes under the head of Annual Development Programme (ADP) 2011-12 and allocated Rs 120 million for the purpose while an amount of Rs 611.769 million for 75 ongoing schemes.

The two news schemes include construction of New Traffic Police Lines at Manawan, GT Road, Lahore at a total cost of Rs 300 million while Rs 100 million have been allocated for year 2011-12. Under this scheme, Driving License Complex, Quarter Guard, CTO and DSP Office Complex Basement, MT Office, Multipurpose Hall and Officers Hostel would be constructed at the aforementioned place.

The second new scheme is Security Arrangements of Police Building in Punjab for which Rs 20 million has been allocated.
In the last financial year, the Punjab government had approved nine new schemes out of the total 45 proposed ones and allocated Rs 150 million.

The number of ongoing schemes during the ADP 2010-11 was 124 which are now reduced to 75. The ongoing schemes include: construction Riverine posts in seven districts, Police Training School Rawat, police posts at entry and exit points in the boundary districts, strengthening of Border Military Police (BMP) and Border Levy (BL) in DG Khan and Rajanpur districts.

During the FY 2010-11, the Punjab government completed barracks/hostels for 500 police personnel, 70 highway patrolling posts (missing facilities), 10 police stations, entry/exit posts at Rajanpur and Qudratabad, and a regional office at Sahiwal.

The set targets include completion of forensic science lab at Lahore, completion of 23 police stations and completion of two entry/exit posts in Rajanpur and Gujrat, 65 classrooms at PTS Chung, Lahore, and strengthening of BMP and BL in DG Khan.
The additional IGP Punjab told Pakistan Today that the budget allocation was according to their expectations.

To a question he said they had not received anything extra like the FC or Sindh Police, adding that FC got various foreign grants whereas the Sindh Police was accommodated by the provincial government in a satisfactory manner.
