There is no record of anyone having achieved greatness just because they happen to have a siren chanting motorcade accompanying them as they move around the city. Yet Pakistani leaders feel great when they have such official embellishments at public expense and shattered when they do not. We hear that Chaudhry Parvez Elahi of Q-League was stripped of his Elite Force escort by the Punjab government once he joined hands with PPP. Now that should have immediately made a dent in his greatness. Yes he was dwarfed but not for long. We hear that Islamabad came to his rescue immediately. He has now been provided a Rangers’ escort complete with state of the art cars, guns and communication gadgets. Recently, he was put up at the state guest house in Lahore to ensure that he not only moves like a Deputy PM but also lives like one though the job is unavailable.
Well, some people are born great but others can always achieve greatness with a top of the line motorcade.

It is said that China is a friend that comes through when others are through with Pakistan. True once again. Isolated we may be but China was there to hold our hand and celebrate a 60 year tie. This week China’s Info minister Wang Chen dropped in to sign a memo of understanding in the field of media cooperation. Understandably our media boss, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, was expected to be the star of the show. Unfortunately the president’s secretariat did not see it quite that way. There was no speech for her at the official banquet. That honour was reserved for President Zardari and the visiting minister. Later, the lady was to find that there was no seat for her either at the president’s table. After some protest and debate on protocol requirement, the lady was placed on table number one but not next to her Chinese counterpart. We know the lady has a powerful voice and could easily hold her own across the table. There again official etiquette required sound control.
