Kalma Chowk gets chunk of roadworks funding

The Kalma Chowk topped the budgetary allocation for road development projects in the city, as the Punjab government earmarked Rs 1.603 billion out of the total Rs 3.064 billion for 20 various roads-related projects in the city for 2011-2012.

Multan Road secured the second position with an allocation of Rs 806 million. The Kalma Chowk received Rs 1.603 billion for three schemes including the study and design of alternative routes for construction and re-modelling of the Kalma Chowk (PC-11) with Rs 1 million, establishment of the project management unit (PMU) for re-modelling of Kalma Chowk with Rs 2 million and project to resolve traffic problem at Kalma Chowk intersection with an allocation of Rs 1.6 billion.

Multan Road obtained an allocation of Rs 806 million for four schemes including the detailed renovation of the existing dual carriage way of Multan Road with Rs 116 million, rehabilitation of the road from Thokar Niaz Baig to Chunburji, land acquisition and shifting of utilities, with Rs 240 million, improvement of Multan Road from Thokar Niaz Baig to Chuburji, road works package-11 length 11 kilometres with Rs 3.3 billion and rehabilitation of Multan Road, proposed sewerage, drainage and water supply system, with allocation of Rs 115 million.

Rs 1.2b allocated for Ring Road Project: The Punjab government has allocated Rs 1.2 billion in the provincial budget of 2011-2012 for the completion of Lahore Ring Road (LRR)’s northern loop which stretches over 40 kilometers in length.

The government has placed the LRR Project under the special infrastructure sector to cater for urban transportation problems in the city. LRR, which started after detailed designing in 2005, will be implemented in two phases. In the first phase, the project’s northern loop, from Gulshan-e-Ravi to Khaira Distributory, which comprises 17 construction packages (including nine interchanges), will be constructed. The second phase of the project will concentrate on the southern loop, where a 49-kilometer stretch of road, linking Ferozepur Road interchange to Shahpur interchange will be constructed.
