15 dead as van plunges into Upper Jhelum Canal

At least 15 students from different local schools died as a school wagon skidded off the road and fell into upper Jhelum canal at Ali Beg town on Friday morning, police said. Superintendent Police (SP) Bhimbher Chaudhry Munir Hussain told APP that three children survived, while seven bodies had so far been recovered by rescue teams.

“Search operation for the remaining bodies in the canal was underway,” the district police chief said. Children who lost their lives in the tragic mishap were identified as Arbab, Mariya Salim, Aisha, Nouman Sideeuqe, Arman Sagher, Meimopona Anser and Turab, while names of eight others could not be ascertained.

Two students survived and were admitted in a local hospital. The SP said the school van (AJK -4675), carrying at least 17 students, suffered the accident at around 06:30 am.
