The US had asked the Pakistani leadership not to humiliate former president Pervez Musharraf after he resigned on the promise of indemnity against prosecution, according to confidential cable released by WikiLeaks. “Don’t humiliate Musharraf. He should be treated as an elderly statesman in Pakistan and it would be good for the country’s image if he would be allowed to stay in the country,” former US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W Patterson had told Pakistani leaders. It was only on the promise of indemnity against prosecution for imposing a state of emergency in the country and sacking judges that Musharraf agreed to step down, the cables disclosed. “Tell the most powerful man in the world (US president) there is no way I would go back on what I have said,” Pakistan People’s Party Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari had said in reply.
