US President Barack Obama on Wednesday discussed plans for a US withdrawal from Afghanistan with Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai during a one-hour videoconference. “The two presidents discussed the transition to an Afghan lead,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney.

“There was not a discussion of specific numbers.” Obama also expressed his sorrow with President Karzai over recent civilian casualties in Afghanistan. Carney said Obama and Karzai discussed a number of topics, including the implications of the death of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a US Special Forces raid in May.

“The president expressed his sorrow over tragic civilian casualties, most recently in Helmand province,” Carney said.
