NADRA to register abandoned children

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will evolve a policy on registering children who are unaware of their parents. “Policies needed consultation with all stakeholders and the process was almost complete. All NGOs and orphanage houses were being consulted in this regard,” NADRA Deputy Chairman Tariq Malik said in a press release on Thursday. He said serious efforts had been made to register abandoned children with unknown parents in the national database.
He said NADRA had even contacted lawmaking authorities to clarify and update rules in this regard. It was unfortunate that NADRA could not register children who are unaware of their parents unless rules in this regard were devised. He said this was a sensitive religious issue and NADRA has sought a fatwa from Shia and Sunni scholars in Iran and Saudi Arabia respectively. This case has also been referred to the Council of Islamic Ideology. He said, under the existing rules, cases of orphans were being processed upon presentation of guardianship certificate, issued by the Guardian Court. A significant number of such cases have been processed by NADRA.
