At least 100 officers have been illegally appointed in the Population Welfare Department in two districts of Karachi division, with the son of the director-general of the department also among those hired, Pakistan Today has learnt. These appointments were made two to three weeks ago on the posts of family welfare assistants (FWA) and male moblizers, despite a ban on any appointments in any department without the necessary approval. These posts were filled without any advertisement or interviews.
Sources told Pakistan Today that District Population Officer (DPO)-East Muzafar Bhutto had appointed 100 employees with any provision and prior permission of the competent authority. Director General Basheer Mangi’s son, Imran Mangi, was also appointed on the basis of a fake Karachi domicile, sources alleged, explaining that Mangi originally belongs to District Shikarpur. Bhutto has previously appointed 20 illegal employees in District West, sources added.
The minister of the department, Syed Ali Mardan Shah, visited the offices of both district East and West after receiving some complaints, but found that 90 percent of the employees were absent, sources claimed. “Out of 20 family welfare centres of both districts, 14 were closed when the minister went on his surprise visit. Most employees are ghost employees, others receive their salaries for doing nothing,” sources said.
