Demanding transparency in every sector and institution in the country, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Tuesday that if it were given the chance to govern, his party would ensure the passage of the defence budget through parliament. In an interview with a private TV channel, Nawaz described the government as inefficient and said it had failed to take notice of some very serious incidents.
Insisting on his demand for a judicious probe into the May 2 US raid in Abbottabad that killed al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, Nawaz warned that his party could take “any step” before June 30 if an independent commission was not formed to investigate the matter. He also promised to ensure implementation of the unanimous resolution passed by a joint session of parliament on the issue.
However, after the political bashing of the army and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)-led government, Nawaz lightened the mood by visiting Bagh-e-Jinnah (Lawrence Gardens) and inaugurated a cricket summer camp set up by Gymkhana Cricket Club.
Sharif, whose love for cricket is well known and who also played at the club while he was prime minister, showed tangible signs of relaxation at the event. “We used to race from one gate to another gate of the garden and now we pray that those days come back,” said a nostalgic Nawaz. On the issue of Shahid Afridi, he said that former captain was a hero to the nation and should be treated accordingly.
