The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday issued notice seeking reply from the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) and the University of Health Sciences (UHS) by June 27 on a petition challenging the quality of education in private medical colleges.

The order was passed by the LHC’s division bench comprising Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Abdul Waheed Khan in response to a petition by the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) through its counsel Chaudhry Waseem A Bhaddar.

Arguing his case, the petitioner submitted that the private colleges neither had 500-bed hospitals affiliated with their colleges nor had nursing colleges established with them. Hence they did not fulfill the mandatory requirements according to the PMDC rules and regulations.

The counsel prayed the court to restore the student-teacher ratio in medical colleges which had been lowered by the PMDC and complained that the private medical colleges were not offering house jobs to their graduates. He contended that the private medical colleges had converted the medical education into a business which was affecting the quality of education and was damaging the reputation of Pakistani doctors worldwide.

The petitioner-association prayed the court to direct the PMDC not to register more colleges till the decision of the petition and submit a detailed report of all the registered colleges after holding a proper inspection.

  1. My only question from the authorities is…Everyone know's that how hard it is to get enrolled in Govt. and top notch Colleges and universities…and their no. minimized to lowest level when it come to professional education.
Considering education and health benefit as mandatory right of all….if you take action to close down such educational institutes..where will these students, young minds end up? Considering inflation and unemployment opportunity…you are not been privileged with due right in first place and then by taking action against just such educational institutions you further push the upcoming generation to depression, insecurity and frustration.
I second the action taken by the LHC, that there must be accountability on quality of education, but along with the monitoring the must be funding mechanism that could help such low funded colleges in general and professional institution in particular.

    • absolutley wrong, private doctors are the cause of lowering medical education quality and harassing the competent drs of govt sector who secured an awsme score in fsc and entrnce test..i request LHC to close these shops i.e so called medical colleges

  2. It is healthy action taken by PMA through Mr Waseem A. Bhaddar, Mian Ali Ishfaq etc.

Court must order to close all the private medical colleges as there are many more reasons. In this era of modern and advanced technologies, world is going ahead and we are allowing private colleges t work for the sake of money collection worst standards of eduction. furthermore, such private colleges are place of elite and ignorant students.
High court must take action to declare all already issued degrees from such colleges as " fake". this would really push student to study with enthusiastic spirit to get admissions in recognised colleges.

  3. I would like to add that not 100% but 90% of the students of private medical colleges have only 60% marks in FSC. Their minds are not tuned to such hard studies of medical and eventually they will get MBBS degree by one way are the other. I hope no one out of those passed will practice. I wish not to land in an emergency who is run by non-competing doctors. I am for sure that many of these young doctors can even sustain a night call of ER in government hospital.

PMDC has no rules and regulation they have commercialized medical education. The the from the degree awarding institutes those affiliate such medical colleges. They should play there role to make the teaching and examination should be of very good standards. to produce good quality doctors. I would like to add one thing more that end product (Out come) depends upon raw material. If our raw material is rubbish then how come the final product can be gold.

    • It is a wrong statement that in private 90% of students are those with 60% marks in FSC. If you actually look at the merit list of CMH Lahore or even LMDC their closing merit is around 75%. It is really stupid to consider a doctor incompetent just because he/she had 60% in FSC. In the end students from both private and public take the same exams checked by the same examiners so why all this comparision?

  4. I admire the courage of PMA to take the stand against the corporate thinking of .All medical and allied health institutions are academies for reciting books and get certification ,there is no real training . Later these graduates learn by using Pakistanis as guinea pigs(Experimental animals.
Some one has to do something before a doctor or nurse will be practising hispoor knowledge on that some one . It could be you , me or Chief Justice Health Secretary
Minister Health and all of our relatives and friends.
An Independent Quality Assurance body should be made ?for health professionals training evaluation and should have representatives from all walks of life even patients relatives.
This model has been tried in many countries and is working well.
God bless our system it is in the hands of blindfolded intellectuals who are digging
    a grave for themselves and future generations without knowing ? As Quran said;

They are blinded , their brains are upside down and they cant hear what is right path.
    Pray for them ?

  5. are you people dumb? look at the student;s point of view too. What is a student supposed to do if he can't get into a government medical college, which basically offer education to only 3000 something students? What about the rest of the students?????

If government has that much of a problem with private medical colleges opening up, Why don't they make their own medical colleges and provide equal opportunities to the students who want to to mbbs and increase their own level of performance and THEN criticize others?

  6. It is a wrong statement that in private 90% of students are those with 60% marks in FSC. If you actually look at the merit list of CMH Lahore or even LMDC their closing merit is around 75%. 7. I fully appreciate the efforts of waseem a baddar and his law firm that they have stood for this noble cause,we are not against private institutes,we are only condemning those nefarious group of people who are looting and plundering money, they should give scholarships to the deserving candidates who get more than 900 marks and could not get admission and some of them dont have the fees to get admission into so called medical college violating the criteria of medical education,it was i who highlighted this issue while working in akhtar saeed medical college and i m proud of this.
