A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, on Tuesday declared the judgment on the flood commission report and also ordered that the recommendations of the commission be made public and the officials responsible for irregularities should be taken to task.
According to a private television channel, the bench ordered that the compliance report should be submitted after every fortnight while the provincial chief secretaries would be responsible for the compliance of the court orders.
The bench also ordered that the recommendations of the commission should be implemented in letter and spirit.
On December 15, 2010, the Supreme Court had constituted a four-member commission to investigate the issue of breaching of dykes and unauthorised diversion of floodwaters by influential people to save their lands during the floods.
Announcing the verdict on Tuesday, the chief justice remarked that to protect the life and property of the people was the government’s responsibility.
The flood commission had submitted an interim report to the Supreme Court in March.
