Govt to help the poor: Firdous

Minister for Information & Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has said the government was trying its best to provide relief to the common man despite various challenges including terrorism and recent floods. She said that the PPP government was looking to strengthen national institutions and all possible measures were being taken to achieve this objective.
To a question, the information minister said the government believed in the freedom of press. Proposing formation of a new media policy, she said gap between the government and private media should be reduced. She stressed political stability and asked all stakeholders to combine and work in the larger interest of the nation. The information minister believed expectations of the common man must be respected.
Firdous said the global economic situation had triggered the surge in inflation. She praised the PPP government for presenting the fourth budget successfully and said many incentives had been announced in the budget. The minister said polices of the present government had allowed for a reduction in prices and availability of essential commodities.
On last year’s floods, she said the government was spending a huge amount for relief and rehabilitation activities, adding that Watan Cards were being issued to the families of flood victims.
