Three-year-old Hasnain is struggling for life with a acute form of leukaemia but was chucked out of the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) after doctors claimed they could not treat him any more and that he was putting other children’s lives in peril.
Hasnain’s father, Rizwan, had brought his ailing son to the NICH one-and-a-half months ago, and doctors diagnosed fifteen days later that the child was suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The doctors administered two injections at the time, and recommended chemotherapy. Rizwan is a resident of Eidho Goth Pipri, Bin Qasim Town and is a mini-bus conductor.
He had expected that treatment for his would be possible at the government-run NICH, but last Wednesday, doctors proclaimed that the boy was suffering from the more dangerous acute myelogenous leukaemia. With the diagnosis, the boy and the parents were chucked out of the hospital on the pretext that treatment for acute myelogenous leukaemia was not possible at the NICH and that, if Hasnain continued to stay, other children could also contract the cancer.
Hasnain is now at home, with his parents claiming that his white platelet count is merely 15,000. “This number will further decrease if treatment is not resumed, but here in Pakistan, treatment will cost around Rs 2 million,” Rizwan explained. On his limited means and salary, treatment for his son is impossible. Doctors on the other hand claim that there are only a few children suffering from the type of leukaemia that Hasnain is suffering from. In fact, Hasnain is the only case in Pakistan.
The parents and their son are now at the mercy of philanthropists to help them.
