The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Pakistan has chalked out an elaborate programme to celebrate the World Environment Day, which is commemorated every year on June 5. According to an IUCN press release, the theme for the year 2011 is “Forests: Nature at your Service”.
Keeping in view the importance of the World Environment Day, the IUCN is undertaking various awareness raising activities in different cities throughout the country. The IUCN Pakistan, in collaboration with Sindh Coastal Communities Development Programme, is organising a mangrove plantation competition in Keti Bunder. Students from two local schools are participating in the competition.
The event focuses on making schoolchildren in coastal communities aware about the importance of the mangrove forests spread along the coastal areas. The participating teams will be awarded with prizes and commemorative shields.
