The Lahore High Court has directed the Punjab University vice chancellor to decide fairly and justly a matter of a student who was denied admission to M Phil allegedly for having studied from a seminary.
The aggrieved student, Muhammad Azam, through his counsel submitted that he passed his M.A in Islamiat from Wafaqul Madaras, Multan and obtained an equivalent certificate from Bahaudin Zikriya University Multan.
He said that he applied for the M Phil regular program 2009-10, for which a candidate should possess a degree either in first or second division and should also have studied in an institution which is duly recognized by the HEC and work of the candidate should relate to three years of teaching and research experience.
The petitioner said being qualified for the admission he applied but the university authorities did not entertain his case for being a seminary student as the university acted in a prejudiced manner against seminary students.
The PU through its counsel argued that for admission to M Phil a candidate should have a master’s degree in first division and at least obtained two second divisions.
He said the petitioner was also required to obtain a certificate from the Equivalence Committee of the Punjab University, which he did not obtain.
At this petitioner’s counsel pointed out that his client had applied for such certificate but the university did not grant the same.
After hearing arguments, the judge disposed of the petition directing the PU vice chancellor to look into the matter and ensure that the petitioner was dealt with fairly, justly and in accordance with law without any discrimination.
The judge also directed the petitioner to file further documents in support of his case.
