At least seven people were killed and several others injured when more than 200 militants attacked a police post in the Shal Talu village of Barawal Tehsil in Upper Dir district. There were reportedly around 26 security forces personnel at the checkpost and all are missing, and officials believe that they might have been killed by the militants. The militants attacked the checkpost late on Tuesday night, and top military, paramilitary and police officers rushed to the site of the attack with contingents to seize the militants.
Exchange of fire with modern and sophisticated weaponry continued with brief intervals throughout Wednesday. More than 200 militants had entered Upper Dir from Afghanistan and proceeded towards the adjacent Swat district, some of them wearing Pakistani, Afghan and NATO army uniform. However, on the way to Swat, the militants attacked the police post in Shal Talu, killing several policemen and taking some captive. Reports state that five to seven policemen were killed in the attack.
