Calling the formation of the five-member commission to probe into the Abbottabad incident a unilateral move of the government, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said such “unilateralism will promote anarchy” in the country. “Parliament’s joint resolution deserves high respect and demands being followed in true letter and spirit, but Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari constituted the commission at their own without meeting the parameters laid down by parliamentarians in unanimity,” Nawaz said at the residence of Navy Lt Yasir Abbass, who embraced martyrdom in the PNS Mehran base attack.
Showing reservations over the formation of the commission, Nawaz said it was clearly mentioned in the resolution that the commission would be formed in consultation between the prime minister and Opposition Leader Nisar Ali Khan. “All terms of reference and contents of the composition necessary for the commission’s formation were smothered and the commission was formed without consulting the PML-N, which is a humiliation of the joint resolution of parliament,” Nawaz said.
Calling the decision “disgusting”, he said the nominees would not have excused from becoming members of the commission had the body been formed according to guidelines set under the parliament’s joint resolution.Nisar even proposed names for the commission in a letter to Gilani, but the government did not bother to reply, Nawaz said. “I am taking the issue very seriously, as government’s policies are leading towards national suicide,” he added.
He criticised the navy chief for saying that the PNS Mehran base attack was not a security lapse, and called for forming probe commissions on the PNS Mehran and GHQ terror attacks.

The opposition parties, especially the PML-N, need to rethink about their approach to the current political problems. The major responsibility is on the PML-N, which runs the Punjab government and is the leading opposition party. The PML-N needs to ensure better administration in Punjab by using political channels rather than relying on the chief minister’s favourite bureaucrats. The paced PML-N confrontation with the federal government and the expressions of public support to the Supreme Court may help achieve their immediate political agenda but it is not going to strengthen the prospects of democracy. It seems that the opposition has returned to the politics of the 1990s. Along with political parties The societal groups and the media need to adopt a non-partisan pro-democracy disposition, calling upon all the state institutions and the political class to respect the constitution in theory and practice and no single institution should attempt to overwhelm other institutions. Pakistan needs institutional balance. Television anchors should pause their alarmist disposition and think of staying above partisan propaganda or the ‘messiah’ complex of knowing the final prescription for saving Pakistan and its under-siege democracy.
