Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has been told to return to the country with the national team instead of going to Australia as the PCB wants to discuss his reported dispute with sacked one-day captain, Shahid Afridi, in the West Indies.
The chief operating officer of the Pakistan board, Subhan Ahmed, said that Waqar was scheduled to fly straight to Sydney from Ireland, where the team is currently playing the one-day series.
“He had said he wanted to go home to Sydney as his wife was not keeping well. We have advised him that if possible he should first come to Pakistan on June 2 and then go to Australia,” Subhan said.
He said that the coach had been told that the PCB wanted to discuss with him the tour report and other issues.
“But we have not forced him to just come to Pakistan. We have told him it is his choice if he has to urgently go home to Sydney, than he can come to Pakistan later,” the PCB official said.
Waqar and Afridi were at loggerheads over selection issues, which blew up after the latter’s return from the West Indies.
Though Afridi didn’t take names but he was clearly referring to Waqar.
Based on team manager Intikhab Alam’s reports, which blamed Afridi for the whole mess in the Caribbean, PCB chairman Ijaz Butt sacked Afridi as one-day captain for the series against Ireland while retaining him in the side as a player.
But Afridi withdrew from the series, saying that he was with his ailing father in the United States.
