No summer vacation for SC this year

A full court meeting, chaired by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, was held here at the Supreme Court on Monday. It unanimously decided not to avail summer vacations to mitigate the sufferings of litigants. It was decided that the benches will work at principal seat as well as branch registries despite the court’s summer vacations. The meeting also reviewed pendency, institution and disposal of cases in the Supreme Court. The chief justice appreciated the efforts of judges for providing justice to the litigants.
After discussing in detail the case of Supreme Court Advocate Muhammad Zafar, the meeting conferred upon him the status of senior advocate of Supreme Court. The meeting reviewed the security arrangements at the Supreme Court building at Islamabad as well as branch registries in the provinces. Necessary directions were issued to concerned quarters for ensuring the security of buildings as well as residences of the judges. The full court discussed the matter pertaining to writing history of the Supreme Court since its establishment.
It was proposed that Aitzaz Ahsan might be requested to compile the history of the apex court. The meeting took stock of the establishment of achieve museum at Supreme Court and directed the concerned staff to accelerate the pace of work. The meeting was briefed about the progress of construction of the new blocks in the Supreme Court. The meeting directed that the work should be completed within two months.
The SC registrar submitted the report about performance of the committee appointed to revise the Supreme Court Rules, 1982, headed by Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed. The full court resolved that since Justice Raja Fayyaz is going to lay down his robes on May 31, thus two-member Committee headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and comprising Justice Mian Saqib Nisar to further review the report and suggest further action.
The meeting unanimously resolved the issue of implementation of SOPs agreed upon with the Supreme Court Bar Association and it was observed that frivolous litigation must be discouraged. It was expected that bar must extend its cooperation to discourage false and frivolous litigation, so that judges could provide speedy justice to the genuine litigants.
