Describing the US-Pakistan relationship as vital, US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen said on Monday he came away from last week’s meeting with Pakistani leaders convinced of their commitment to work with the US on security, intelligence and development.
Appearing on TV shows on Memorial Day in the US, Mullen also drew the American people’s attention to Pakistan’s difficult fight and the sacrifices that the key South Asian country was making in the anti-terrorism struggle.
“It was a very frank meeting; it’s a very difficult time and yet a very important relationship,” he said of the May 27 meeting that he and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had with the Pakistani political and military leadership in Islamabad.
Mullen said he and Clinton went to Pakistan to “reaffirm the commitment on the part of the United States to work with Pakistan” and to send a message about the importance of the US-Pakistan relationship.
