Gloves stand out in sports exports

The exports of sports goods from Pakistan increased by 8.06 percent during the first ten months of the current fiscal as compared to the same period of last year. Sports goods worth $261.148 million were exported abroad during July-April (2010-11) as compare to the exports of $241.677 million during July-April (2009-10), according to data released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS).
The major contributor towards enhancing the sports’ exports included gloves, exports of which increased by 23.26 percent during the period under review. Gloves worth $101.086 million were exported during the period in comparison to exports of $82.010 million last year. However, export orders for footballs witnessed a decline of 2.23 percent by falling from $120.487 million last year to $117.805 million this year, the data revealed. The export of other sports goods, however, increased by 7.85 percent by going up from $39.180 million to $42.257 million last year.
Export of sports goods during April 2011 increased by 1.45 percent, but declined by 18.16 percent compared to exports of April 2010. Sports exports during April 2011 were recorded at $29.258 million against the exports of $28.841 in April 2010 and $35.752 million in March 2011, according to the data.
Among the sports products, exports of gloves during April 2011 were recorded at $10.623 million against the exports of $7.364 million last year, showing an increase of 44.26 percent. However compared to the exports of $16.253 million in March 2011, exports during April 2011 contracted 34.64 percent. On the other hand, the exports of footballs during April 2011 decreased by 6.59 percent and increased by 2.24 percent when compared to the exports of April 2010 and March 2011 respectively. Exports of footballs during April 2011 stood at $15.598 million against exports of $16.699 million in April 2010 and $15.257 million in March 2011. Exports of other sports goods declined by 36.44 percent and 28.41 percent during April 2011 compared to exports of April 2010 and March 2011 respectively. Exports of other sports goods stood at $3.037 million in April 2011 against the exports of $4.778 million in April 2010 and $4.242 million in March 2011, the data revealed.
