1,300 fresh healthcare professionals at the country’s service

1,300 graduates belonging to different disciplines received their degrees and shields at the second convocation of the Dow University of Health Sciences held at its Ojha Campus of on Sunday. The university conferred degrees upon the graduates of MBBS, BDS, Nursing and Medical Technology and other postgraduates of various disciplines for the year 2010 and 2011. Sindh Governor and DUHS Chancellor, Dr Ishratul Ebad was the chief guest at the event. Provincial Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed also attended the convocation. A large number of dignitaries, academic council members, professors, lecturers, physicians, parents and students were also present on the occasion.
Dr Ebad, in his speech, congratulated the graduates and their parents. He lauded the efforts of the students and reminded all graduates of the responsibility that has been placed on their shoulders as medical practitioners. He also appreciated the efforts of DUHS Vice Chancellor Prof Hameed Khan and his faculty members in the establishment and the development of the university. “It is essential for us to ensure that the investment of country into our education would well return to the society,” he added.
He said that healthcare system was in state of evolution and the government is striving not only to make affordable, but also provide quality to all. He appreciated the role of medical institutions in assisting the government to achieve its objectives by producing good doctors with their academic and research activities. Dr Ahmed said that doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff were the backbone of healthcare system.  In his address, the DUHS vice chancellor recounted the progress of the university since its inception. He said that it was established in 2003 with three constituent institutions and now it has almost 40.
 He said that the vision and mission of DUHS is focused on three domains that include academic excellence, human resource development and community healthcare. “The university since its inception has been aiming to provide maximum possible health services to the community through various ways,” he added. He advised the graduates to maintain high professional standards in their house job and future medical practice. Earlier, the governor distributed gold medals, certificates and shields among the honour holders.
