An independent commission to probe the Abbottabad incident would be set up after consultations with all the political parties and stakeholders, Information Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan and former information minister and PPP Information Secretary Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Sunday.
“The leader of the opposition in the National Assembly has proposed some names for the commission but there are also some other signatories of the resolution. The PM has started consultations with them to evolve a consensus on it,” she said while addressing a press conference along with former law minister, Dr Babar Awan and Qamar Zaman Kaira.
She said “We are trying to find a suitable person with international repute, unblemished past and acceptable to all the parties and people, to head the commission,” she added. Commenting on the statements of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Chief Mian Nawaz Sharif, she said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was not afraid of such statements. The politics of clash and personal vendetta is not in the interest of the country, she added.
Regarding drone attacks, Dr Firdous said that the president and the PM have shared their concerns with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her visit to Pakistan. To another question regarding completion of Election Commission of Pakistan, she said a committee had been constituted in this regard. She said the government was fully aware of the problems being faced by the people and it would take measures to give relief to them in the budget.
The minister said the government had opened diplomatic channels to improve relations with the neighbours, regional and international forces and after 30 years it had opened up an energy corridor with Russia. She said that the lead information was given by Pakistani agencies for operation against Osama bin Laden. Speaking on the occasion, Kaira said the path of confrontation adopted by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was not in the interest of democracy and the country.
“The PML-N has started the politics of hate and confrontation which will damage the interest of the country,” he said, adding that PPP would not allow anyone to derail democracy. He asked the Punjab government to give the detail of spending of additional Rs 300 billion, which the province obtained under the NFC Award.
