A high alert was declared at the PNS Bahadur, a naval base in Karachi, on Friday as intelligence agencies forewarned the Pakistan Navy of the possibility of a terrorist attack, sources told Pakistan Today.
According to sources, extraordinary security arrangements inside and outside the base has been made after the warning. Eight training schools are functioning inside the PNS Bahadur where the navy personnel are provided training in warfare, underwater activities and other professional matters.
Sources say a language school is also operating in the premises to enhance English skills of the naval staff and foreigners belonging to security organisations. The navy high-ups and other staff members at the base located at Karsaz Road remained under intense pressure when a very high alert was announced following the terrorist attack threat, sources added.
Meanwhile, after the May 22 attack on PNS Mehran, many things have been changed inside boundary wall of the naval base, but everything remains the same outside. There are some questions that remain to be unanswered about the security arrangements and the terrorist attack. According to the FIR lodged by navy, there were four terrorists and three of them blew themselves up with explosives.
It means only one terrorist was killed in the security forces’ fire. A small bridge on the drain outside the boundary wall lead to the base, which was used by terrorists, is still there. The area is mostly abandoned. Police had found two ladders from both sides of boundary wall. Shah Faisal Colony No 5 is located on the other side of boundary wall of the base with an only 15 feet distance between the drain and locality.
A walk-chalking by an outlawed outfit is visible on a wall and the slogan ‘Long Live Mullah Omar’ is also written on the walls near the base, showing the penetration enjoyed by the terrorists in the area. Police officials say there are many seminaries in the neighbourhood which are largely under the influence of banned organisations.
A large portion of the boundary wall is still without barbed wire while a police picket has been established on the point from where the terrorists crossed the wall. The museum at the PNS Mehran is still closed for visitors while a theatre on the Lucky Star, adjacent to the Pakistan Navy offices, is open for everyone.
