Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Friday the democratic government had allowed ‘others’ to evolve policies against the aspirations of Pakistanis.
“People did not expect that a democratic government will allow ‘unauthorised ones’ form its policies,” Nawaz said while addressing a meeting of PML-N ticket holders in the upcoming AJK elections. He said the government had not probed the Abbottabad incident sincerely and had also failed to learn a lesson from the PNS Mehran attack. Asking the government to mend its ways, Nawaz said that the present style of governance would not allow rulers to stay for long. He stated that supremacy of the constitution was a must for good governance.
“Supremacy of law and equal justice on resources was imperative to end terrorism. Progress was not possible without curbing corruption,” he said. He added that greater accountability could help strengthen institutions. Nawaz claimed that the PML-N had formed an agenda of reforms and had devised a strategy for economic stability. “Self-accountability is solution to the present day crises. We need to safeguard our national interests fearlessly,” he said.
Meanwhile, talking to Indian High Commissioner Sharat Sabarwal, Nawaz said the resumption of the composite dialogue process and good ties between Pakistan and India were necessary for peace and stability in the region. Nawaz said that Pakistan, despite being a victim of terrorism, holds the key in the restoration of harmony in the region, sources said.
PML-N objects to list of nominees for ECP
ISLAMABAD – The PML-N has objected to the list of nominees sent by the prime minister for the constitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan, saying names of PCO judges in the list were unacceptable. Talking to reporters on Friday at the Parliament House, the opposition leader said a reply to the nominations forwarded by the prime minister would be sent by Tuesday in consultation with opposition parties.
“But we will not accept any PCO judge or one who is corrupt and has political affiliations. We have strong reservations over the incumbent chief election commissioner. The chief election commissioner should be a person capable of holding transparent election,” he remarked. He said the PML-N wanted an independent accountability commission and “we will continue to block the way of a namesake accountability commission”.
