Up to 60 people are feared dead after the bus they were travelling in plunged into a river in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Friday, police said. The accident took place in the village of Changan in the Neelum valley, 130 kilometres northeast of Muzaffarabad, the capital of AJK. “There is no trace of the bus wreckage or of any body after the bus fell from a high mountain road into the gushing waters of Neelum River,” local police station chief Mohammad Yaqoob Mughal said.
The conductor of the bus managed to save himself by jumping from the vehicle as it fell and he has told police that there were up to 60 passengers in the bus, Mughal said. Pakistan Army personnel and people from nearby villages were busy in rescue operation. But Mughal said “hopes to find anyone alive were diminishing”.
