Observing strikes is not doctors’ way: AQ Khan

Nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan Qadir has condemned strikes by the doctors, saying such protests only affected the patients. He was addressing as chief guest at the 11th convocation of Allama Iqbal Medical College on Tuesday.

Addressing the young graduates, he said doctors in developed countries such ads Sweden never observed strikes but instead put their demands to a select committee for an amicable resolution of issues. He advised the doctors to adopt the same procedure. He recognized the problems the medical community faced but said strikes should not be an option. He praised the Punjab government for providing better facilities to the people and said Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif should serve the country at federal level.

Dispelling the impression that Pakistani nuclear assets were vulnerable, he said Pakistan had all the capability to defend its borders and its nuclear assets.
Health Secretary Jehanzaib Khan congratulated the young medical professionals and said that the Punjab Health Department was doing all-out efforts for doctors and hoped that doctors will come up to the people’s expectations.

AIMC Principal Professor Javed Akram presented the annual progress report of the college and hospital and highlighted all the development projects being undertaken in both the college and the hospital. He informed the participants about health facilities available at Jinnah Hospital.

University of Health Sciences (UHS) VC Malik Mubashar said doctors took the oath of serving the people but were “sidetracked” from the mission because of some problems. He said doctors should bend their lives according to the oath and achieve their mission.

Female students outshined males in the convocation, as a majority of the medals were awarded to female graduates. Dr AQ Khan gave medals to the prominent students. Hamna Khudayar was declared the best graduate of 2004-09 and got 14 medals in all. While, Rija Tariq was declared the best graduate of session 2005-10 and got 10 medals. Furthermore, the toppers of Gynecology were awarded Dr AQ Khan medals.
