For the second day in a row, dacoits targeted United Bank Limited (UBL) bank and fled having looted Rs 3 million. The robbery was the fourth in Lahore in the last 10 days. Eyewitnesses said four armed men arrived on White Toyota Corolla and entered the UBL Iqbal Town branch at 10 am. They said the dacoits had cover their faces with masks and were about 30 to 40 years of age. They said police reached the spot after the dacoits had fled, successfully completing the robbery.
SP Iqbal Town Syed Muntazir Mehdi claimed police reached the spot within no time after receiving a report of the incident. He said that when armed dacoits entered the bank, they held the staff and three to four others present in bank hostage including the two security guards. They forced staff to give up all money in the bank.
The dacoits escaped the scene on the corolla having taken about Rs 3 millions from the bank. SP Muntazir claimed a sub-inspector had detected the accused dacoits and had given them a chase near Samanabad Morr but the accused manage to escape. He put the blame on the banks security guards for not performing duty.
βThe guards should have should some resistance,β said Muntazir.β The SP said that a patrolling force had been present in the locality and if the robbers had been resisted the police mobile would have come to the rescue. He further said banks were already on high alert after the bank robbery the day before. A case was registered against four unknown accused. On Tuesday, UBL Ferozepur road branch was robbed with dacoits fleeing with Rs 1.5 million.
