At least nine people were killed and several others injured in an exchange of fire between tribesmen from rival sectarian groups in Kurram Agency. Conflicting reports about clashes between Shia and Sunni tribesmen have emerged, with elders from both tribes blaming each other for starting the fight. Reportedly, late on Saturday night tribesmen from Balishkhel and Khawar Keley were involved in a fierce shootout, with both sides using sophisticated weapons against each other.
So far officials in Parachinar, headquarters of Kurram Agency, have confirmed nine deaths in the clashes and injuries to several others. The exchange of fire between the rival tribesmen continued late into Sunday afternoon, with brief intervals. The administration has imposed curfew in Sada and surrounding areas.National Assembly Member from Kurram Agency Sajid Hussain Toori told reporters that militants had attacked the Shia tribesmen in Balishkhel village. He said recently the Peshawar corps commander had visited Parachinar and announced military action against Taliban militants there.
Militants associated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan are known to enjoy support from Sunni tribesmen in the area, and they have made travelling between Peshawar and Parachinar tough for Shia tribesmen. A large number of Shia tribesmen have been killed, abducted and forced to pay heavy sums in ransom to the militants.
