July-August summer vacation proposal scrapped

After being strongly criticised by different sections of society, particularly parents of school-going children, the Sindh government has finally announced that all public and private schools would remain closed in June and July. The steering committee of the Education Department had initially decided that all schools of the province would be closed in July and August. Later, Senior Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq announced that the Cambridge education system would observe summer vacation in June and July as usual.
The Sindh government’s frequently changing statements regarding summer vacation had been a cause of a lot of misunderstanding among students, their parents and the managements of schools. The education minister had said that the steering committee had received suggestions from the civil society and the public and private sectors that the summer vacation should be rescheduled to facilitate the students in Ramazan.
In view of the suggestions, the committee had decided that the summer vacation in all schools of the province would be observed from July 1 to August 31, and that the educational institutions would reopen after Eidul Fitr. In order to take the Cambridge schools on board, a committee was constituted that comprised Acting Education Secretary Waeem Ursani, Private Educational Institutions Director Mansoob Siddiqui and Board of Intermediate Education Karachi Chairman Prof Anwar Ahmed Zai.
The Education Department had informed the media that no decision had been taken regarding the summer vacation and a summary in this regard was forwarded to Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah for approval.Finally, the chief minister has put an end to all speculations by announcing at a press conference that the summer vacation would be observed in June and July by all government and private schools.
