Representing a life that is nothing extraordinary, nothing derogatory

An exhibition of Abeer Asim’s artworks titled ‘Pehchaan’ is running at ArtChowk-the Gallery until June 2. According to a press release issued by the gallery, the work comprises the element of a star coming from the flag of Pakistan. “These scattered and chaotic stars signify the lost value and essence of the emotions attached with the flag. ‘Pehchaan’ is an appeal to seek attention of the millions to revolt before the peaceful colours green and white turn grey under the ashes of conflicts and disasters,” the statement said.
Asim recently completed her Master of Arts degree in Ceramics from UK’s University of Wales. She had received her Bachelors degree in Ceramic Design from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture.
She continues to explore the potentiality of ceramics as a strong medium of art to communicate her ideas and concerns. She is also running a commercial ceramic art studio in Karachi. “Ceramics enables me to develop and communicate ideas and experiences. It provides me with a sense of belonging, a signature style, a strong meaning and direction,” Asim says.
She adds, “The excitement of serendipitous moments that would follow the creative process keep me going from one step to another, enable me to establish a dialogue and deliver meaning, by exploring my strength of skills and utilising the versatility of the alchemy it beholds.” At a time when Pakistan is confronting challenges, she established the series ‘Pehchaan’ and also exhibited it in the UK “as a representation of a life that is nothing extraordinary, nothing derogatory.”
