The Government College University Sustainable Development Study Centre (GCU SDSC) is holding Forest Biodiversity Model Exhibition in relation with the International Forest Biodiversity Day 2011 at 11am today (Monday). The students have also prepared models based on themes regarding forest ecology to highlight different anthropogenic activities that pose threat to the global biodiversity. GCU SDSC Director Dr Aminl Haq said the United Nations General Assembly adopted May 22 as “The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB)” in December 2000 to commemorate the adoption of the agreed text of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
He said the purpose of the day was to increase awareness about issues in biodiversity and to increase practical action. He said 2011 was celebrated as the International Year of Forests and added that Forest Biodiversity was the theme for this year’s International Biodiversity Day.
