The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) informed the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday that it has no plans to set up a food street after removing a greenbelt in Shadbagh Scheme II. The reply came in the court of Justice Azmat Saeed during the hearing of a petition filed by Hafiz Moeen Ahmad through his lawyer Azhar Siddique.
The PHA submitted the reply that no food street was planned in the area and the petition should be disposed of being baseless. However, the counsel for the Lahore City District Government sought time to file a reply and obtain instructions from the city government authorities on whether or not there were any plans for the food street project in the area. The court accepting the request adjourned the matter until May 27.
Earlier, the petitioner had submitted that the PHA had decided to remove a greenbelt in violation of the court orders and contended that the PHA had no authority to convert parks and greenbelts into buildings. He said the action was violation of the fundamental rights of citizens and also against the Local Government Ordinance 2001. The petitioner requested the court to set aside the order of setting up a food street in the area and restore the greenbelt.
At the last hearing, the court had barred the government from cutting trees in the greenbelt.
