Bus overturns; elderly woman killed, 16 injured

A speeding public bus overturned at the Lasbela Bridge on Friday, resulting in killing an elderly bystander and injuring 16 passengers, the Jamshed Quarters police said. A passenger bus of route No W-1, bearing registration No PE-0982, overturned due to speeding and hit an unidentified elderly woman, killing her on the spot.
Sixteen passengers – Qasim, Noman, Muneer, Abdul Majeed, Mir Muhammad, Muhammad Arshad, Asif, Sameena, Abida and seven other unidentified people- sustained injuries. Police shifted the victims to the Civil Hospital Karachi and the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH). The driver responsible managed to flee from the crime scene. However, the vehicle involved in the accident was impounded.
HOMICIDE: A labourer was killed at a bus stop in Korangi, the Korangi Industrial Area police said. Haroon Rehman, 24, resident of Sharifabad, was standing at a bus stop near his house when two men on a motorcycle opened fire on him. Rehman sustained two bullet wounds and died on the spot, whereas the fleeing culprits were cornered by the patrolling police. After a brief encounter, the police arrested Jan Muhammad and recovered two TT pistols from him, but Nadeem Afghani managed to escape.
Rehman was killed because he and Muhammad’s niece had got married out of free will in Hangu two years ago and they had been hiding in Karachi. The victim is survived by his wife and their three-month-old daughter. His body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and later handed over to his heirs. Police registered FIR No 496/11 against Muhammad and Afghani on the complaint of the victim’s brother.
SUICIDE: A man hanged himself at his house in Nazimabad, the Paposh police check-post officials said. Yasir Bagh Hussain, 24, resident of Ashraf Nagar, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan. Hussain wanted to marry a girl, but her family rejected his proposal. Dejected, he committed suicide. His body was shifted to ASH from where it was taken away by his family without completing legal formalities.
