The National Assembly Standing Committee on Labour and Manpower was informed on Thursday by the secretary concerned that Rs 160 million in marriage grants for the Sindh Worker Welfare Board (WWB) had been embezzled. The committee met at the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Ghulam Haider.
In his briefing, the Labour and Manpower secretary said there were reports that Rs 160 million allocated for marriage grants to workers had been misused. He said Bureau of Immigration Director General Umer Morio had been tasked with probing into the alleged scam in the Sindh WWB. “The inquiry officer has made initial findings and established that willful violation of the instructions of the federal government for utilisation of funds took place,” he said.
“Marriage grants were approved in favour of so-called unqualified people against the stated criteria and funds were misappropriated because some of the beneficiaries did not confirm the receipt of amount,” the secretary added. The secretary said officers of the Sindh WWB under references committed gross violation of the instructions by the federal government and relevant rules.
He said the case against the officers concerned had been referred to NAB and the FIA was also looking into the matter.
