Intentional myopia

When this immoral Charsadda blast took place killing dozens and injuring scores, I was actually offended by the question asked on CNN World One, “Why are these attacks targeting Pakistanis?” The impact of the query, innocent as it may appear to be, has multiple finite implications.

The first is my response, breaking the rule that a question should not follow another, who else but Pakistanis have been targeted in Pakistan during the decade since 9/11? In real terms, what is the percentage of foreigners that have died in relation to the thousands of Pakistani mortalities? This in a war that was not initially Pakistan’s but is now a scary part of our everyday lives.

Furthermore, it tends to implicate the entire Pakistani nation as being involved in extremism since that would be the only logical reason it would not be targeted. Given that this is possibly a popular American misconception, hence this could be the media’s attempt to whip up a frenzy.

It also serves to support the current negative opinion being voiced internationally. It denies in totality the huge sacrifice Pakistan has had to make during this period, not only just in loss of lives but disruption of law and order, trade, commerce and development. The entire financial focus of the government has been altered to fund security concerns and crucial projects have been deferred. This effect is being felt now and will worsen with time.

Let’s be crystal clear on Pakistan’s role. Pakistan’s commitment in owning this action against terrorism and extremism has been total since we chose the “with us” path. There is no denying a section, albeit small, is rabid in its hatred of what they term kafirs. Let’s also acknowledge that perhaps a small segment of the security forces are sympathisers. These extremists are armed, fanatical and destructive. And they have been unleashed on the Pakistani state by none other than Osama bin Laden’s creation.

Except for this OBL humiliation, be it intentional or simply utter incompetence, it is a known fact that Pakistan has flushed out these termites and killed them in droves. Some have been handed over for interrogation and, we can safely assume, have provided leads that may even have paved the way to Osama’s lair. Government has even run foul of the judiciary in being ‘unable’ to provide information or access to hundreds of “missing” that are believed to have extremist connections.

Limitations that are well known, in terms of equipment and trained manpower, to handle guerilla warfare are definitely a stumbling block. These have apparently been addressed through continued cooperation and exchanges of intelligence. However, the US or NATO forces do act alone in Pakistan and have not been hindered. In fact the government in Pakistan has drawn tremendous flack within the parliament and from the public in allowing drone strikes into the Pakistani heartland.

All of this has completely and conveniently become the sole victim of intentional myopia because it currently serves the purpose. Obama wants to win an election. Until OBL it was not a certainty; now it is. Then there is the promise to reduce the number of troops before the election. Finally, a real probability. Pakistan is a convenient fall guy. So let the dogs loose.

Kerry coming, Hillary cancelling, will Obama visit, threats of aid disruption? Pile on the pressure! I guess the US thinks this is fair, but for crying out loud, at least state the facts. Pakistan has done more than any other country and continues to play host, so get off its back and let’s get on with getting the job done. And this will only happen with complete cooperation and trust within the two governments and the security agencies. It is a question of striking while the iron is hot, to use a cliché. At this time, to indulge in an exchange that could push relationships to the brink of disconnection is very damaging indeed. Damage control is desperately needed; internally within the Pakistan forces and externally with the concerned nations united in intent and purpose.

Under the circumstances, it would be appropriate for the US administration to tacitly acknowledge the support of the Pakistanis in statements issued by it rather than give Pakistani support a condescending mention in an otherwise stinging statement. The kind of support they have been giving their forces in the recent theatres of war even during their biggest cock-ups. And there have been plenty!

Pakistan’s authorities have no option now except for a total cleansing of extremist influence with or without US assistance. Post-OBL terrorist activities have recorded a predictable increase and demand immediate containment before they spill out of control. The prerequisite is to restore our credibility with the entire world and this must dominate all schools of thought. Minus this, the US is compelled to look at alternate allies in the region. Simultaneously, Pakistan must also acknowledge that enemy number one is terrorism and jihadi outfits must be eliminated. If cooperation is severed or emotional decisions are thrust upon the government, then we are sitting ducks.
