Engineer Hassan Haqqani, the elder brother of Pakistan’s ambassador to the US, is likely to be appointed the chairman of the National Highway Authority (NHA) within the next few days. A source in the NHA said the government had finalised the name of Hassan Haqqani for the post, as he met the criteria for the job being a civil engineer and having management experience in public and private sector organisations.
Hassan is presently serving as the managing director of the National Construction Limited, a state-owned company under the Ministry of Housing and Works. Two other officers of the District Management Group (DMG) are vying for the post, but they lack the required expertise for the job. The prime minister has directed for the selection of a candidate that met the criteria for the job to avoid the appointment’s challenging in a court of law.
The post fell vacant after the retirement of former chairman Chaudhry Altaf Hussain.
