After Monday’s fatal attack on a Saudi consulate officer, the Sindh government has decided to enhance the security of all consulates operating in the city, besides making foolproof security arrangements for the consulate staff, Pakistan Today has learnt.
The decision came up on Tuesday at a meeting of the representatives of law enforcement agencies, including police, Rangers, Crime Investigation Department and Special Investigation Unit among others at the Central Police Office. Well-placed sources told Pakistan Today that at the meeting, the security officials proposed that security measures for consulates and their staffers be reviewed using latest modern technology. The meeting was called in the backdrop of Monday morning’s attack, in which a staff member of Saudi consulate was shot dead by unidentified assailants.
Earlier, two grenades were also thrown at the Saudi consulate. Under the new security plan, deployment of plain-clothed security officials would be ensured at all important consulates in the city besides stationing of a police squad at the main entrance.
It was also decided at the meeting that closed-circuit television cameras would be installed along all the roads leading to the consulates, with random police checking on regular basis. The consulates of various countries to be covered under the new security plan include Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, Sweden and America among some others, the sources disclosed.
