All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) Secretary General Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif on Tuesday issued legal notice for compensation worth $50 million to British newspaper Guardian’s chief editor and reporter for publishing false and fabricated news against former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf.
Guardian had published a news story stating that Musharraf had struck a secret deal with the US allowing unilateral raids in Pakistan to capture slain al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden and other leaders of the terrorist network. The legal notice read that false news was published to malign the former president and stigmatise his political image in the country.
The legal notice pointed out that the British newspaper without confirming the varsity and authenticity of the news story, published it and started propaganda with the intention to malign the 67-year-old former general. The legal notice read that the news item not only damaged Musharraf’s reputation but also established a ridiculous impression that as if Pakistan and the US work beyond the sphere of their domestic and international laws.
Taking advantage of the defamation campaign initiated by the British newspaper, political opponents of the former president criticised him for their point scoring and tried to damage his political image. Musharraf had not signed any secret deal with the US for unilateral raids inside Pakistan and ISI Director General (DG) Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha also acknowledged it during his briefing to Parliament that Pakistan had never signed any sort of agreement allowing the US to carry out raids inside Pakistan, the notice said.
Saif said that Musharraf is a patriotic leader and compared to other leaders, he never compromised the country’s sovereignty and integrity.
