A batch of 250 Pakistani troops Sunday left for Congo to perform peace keeping duties under the aegis of United Nations mission. Brigadier Humayun Zafar bade them farewell at the Allama Iqbal international Airport, prior to their departure on a UN chartered aircraft.
The troops will replace the already deployed Pakistan Army contingent in the war-ravaged country as part of the relieve-and-rotation schedule. Brigadier Humayun said Pakistan Army had a glorious track record of rendering dedicated services for the restoration of peace all over the globe. He cited the examples of in Somalia, Eastern Slovenia, Bosnia, Haiti, East Timor, Liberia, Sudan, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone where Pakistani personnel had enhanced the country’s image among the comity of the nations.
He told the soldiers that they were embarking on an assignment as the ambassadors of the country and their every action should be truly reflective of the exemplary traditions of Pakistan Army. The Pakistani peace-keepers are serving in Congo for the last three years and deployed in the most inaccessible part of the country where various armed combatants belonging to various feuding tribal factions were continuously engaged in intense civil strife.
