Dr Rafia Taj, the chairwoman of the University of Karachi (KU) Mass Communication Department, has resigned in protest against the apathy showed by the KU administration following an attack on her daughter by unidentified people in the university’s premises. The KU registrar has accepted Dr Taj’s resignation and former Mass Communication Department chairman Dr Tahir Masood has replaced her.
Dr Taj’s daughter was with a relative in a car when unidentified men roughed them up. The daughter ran up to her house at the campus and returned to the spot with her mother, but the culprits had already fled the scene.
Dr Taj called up the KU high-ups to inform them of the incident, whereas senior security officer Iftikhar and security officer Asif arrived at the scene. Dr Taj’s daughter recounted her story, but the security officials did not seem interested. Later, the senior security officer left after directing his subordinate to listen to her account. The indifference of the senior security officer, who was appointed by the KU administration and is drawing a handsome salary, further fanned Dr Taj’s anger. She approached the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat with her daughter to report the incident and lodged a protest against the senior security officer’s attitude, but she was returned disappointed.
The meeting with the vice chancellor and the pro-vice chancellor was also of no use as the KU administration gave the impression that it was powerless to do anything in the matter. Dejected, Dr Taj resigned in protest against the KU management’s failure in providing security to the university’s staff and their families. When asked about security lapse, senior security officer Iftikhar refused to speak to Pakistan Today and requested approaching the public relations officer. Dr Masood, who has replaced Dr Taj, said that he has not received an appointment letter yet.

  1. That's a very sad news! Dr. Rafia Taj had been an asset to our department.
However, the story is not balanced. The reporter should have approached the security officials as well in order to bring out both sides of the picture.
The story seems more like a narration than a news story. There aren't any attributions.

  2. Absolutely disappointed with the way security officials acted. V C must take proper action regarding the safety of teachers and students.

  3. Although its bad that such a thing happened. But good news for students is that a person who doesn't know how to teach and manage is no more the chairman. At least the depart can be a bit politics free now.

  4. taed e sitam gar hai chup reh kar sitem sehna…the points is that k rafia taj k sath he q howa hai …rafia taj ki dushmani kis k sath hosakti hai????we know every thing about the depart….

  5. This is very surprising!! VC must take action and order proper security arrangements for teacher and students.Dr. Rafia Taj is really an asset.

  6. Rafia Taj: Good riddance, these vultures in a teacher disguise. But when it comes to security, this matter is quite serious and requires immediate measures. After all it is something about security of thousands of students. And for those who think she is an assets, to them I would say, STFU loosers.
