Widowed nurse tortured to death

At least five people, including two women, killed a nurse in her house in Faiz Colony the other day. A nurse, Shafqat Bibi, was the widow of Naveed Ahmad. Her daughter, Maria Kashif, told the police that two women, Naila and Naima, were running a brothel in the locality and her mother had often asked them to stop this dirty business. On the day of the incident, the accused women and their three accomplices, Umer Farooq Gujjar, Abdul Qadeer and Muhammad Talat, forced an entry into her house, badly tortured her and then strangled her. The police have started investigation after registering a case and are conducting raids to arrest the accused persons.
DCO VISITS DHQ HOSPITAL: DCO Javed Iqbal Bukhari paid a surprise visit to the DHQ hospital and sought information from patients about the provision of free of cost medicines to them. He was told by MS Dr Muhammad Hussain that the provincial government had been requested to appoint doctors in the hospital against vacant posts. Finance EDO Ramzan Shahid, Assistant Commisioner Sikandar Zulqarnain and other officials were also present on the occasion.
SEMINAR ON WOMEN’S RIGHTS: Women Workers Helpline (WWH) held a seminar on the topic of violence and sexual harassment of women and laws for their protection. A senior lawyer from Lahore Barister Nadeem Fazil, Labour Party Pakistan (LPP) central spokesman Farooq Tariq, WWH chairperson Azra Nisar, secretary general Ms Rifat Maqsood, LPP district coordinator Tariq Mahmood and others spoke on this occasion and told the participants that under the new laws harassment of women was a punishable crime. They demanded of the government to eliminate all laws against women and redress complaints of working women. They proposed that a committee should be set up in every department and institution for the protection of women’s rights.
