The Pakistan Muslim League-Likeminded (PML-Likeminded) formally announced on Saturday its support for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s Senator Ishaq Dar for opposition leader in the Upper House of parliament. As the race for the slot enters its final stage, the PML-N and other allied parties on the opposition benches in Senate have offered the PML-Likeminded the position of deputy opposition leader. The opposition leader’s office has been vacant since Senator Wasim Sajjad left the post after his party joined the treasury benches. The PML-N has nominated Ishaq Dar, while the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has nominated Abdul Ghafoor Haideri.
PML-Likeminded President Senator Salim Saifullah told reporters after a meeting with Dar that his group had decided to support the latter against Haideri. Meanwhile, an application signed by 25 senators from various political parties including the PML-N, PML-Likeminded, PML-Q Independent, Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao, Jamaat-e-Islami, Balochistan National Party, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith, in favour of Dar was submitted to the Senate Secretariat for issuance of notification for Dar as opposition leader.
