LHC verdict on dual office of President is political: former envoy

Former ambassador BA Malik, while commenting on Lahore High Court`s decision on dual office of President Asif Ali Zardari, said on Saturday it “is political and moral verdict and not a legal decision.”
In a statement here today he said “it is pertinent to state that political and moral issues are judged by the court of the people in an electoral contest.” Politics and morality fall in the exclusive domain of the people of a country including Pakistan, he said.
“Personally I have the highest respect for the apex judiciary of my country and in my comment therefore no offence or disrespect for My Lords is intended,” the former diplomat said.
Moral and political issues are tested on the anvil of public opinion which is the final arbiter in all such matters.
“Even the aforesaid judgment of Lahore High Court does not declare Zardari’s activities as illegal and expresses the hope that the President will implement the finding of the Court.,” said BA Malik.
As the nation is passing through difficult times all concerned quarters need to be cautious and a sense of balance and proportion.
“The present democratic dispensation as in all other countries will continue to reform itself with the passage of time because democracy alone if uninterrupted can improve itself .The political debate currently going on in the country has the potential to gear up our nascent democratic process ,” he said.
Final judgment will of course come from the real sovereign which is none other than the periodically disenfranchised people of this country, said Malik.
