The provincial government is taking concrete steps to overcome water shortage in the tail-end and far-flung rural areas of Karachi, with the Sindh Local Government Department through the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) planning to set up and install 11 reverse osmosis (RO) plants in Lyari and Keamari towns.
A decision to this effect was taken at a Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) meeting on Friday that was chaired by Additional Chief Secretary (Development) Muhammad Ishaque Lashari at his office. The meeting was attended by the administrative secretaries and officials of various departments, including Finance. Participants of the meeting reviewed and discussed the overall water position in these areas and to explore new avenues for increasing water availability through various sources.
The meeting approved five RO plants for Lyari, that will be built at a cost of Rs 2,036.88 million in the Playground area, Nawabad Lyari, Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road, Chakiwara Road and Izzat Shah area. These will be completed with four months. Six RO plants will be constructed in Keamari town, a project worth Rs 2,485.54 million. The RO plants will be set up near Nasir Hotel, Mauripur bus stop, Kamela Chowk, Mauwach Goth and Machar Colony.
The PDWP also approved development scheme for Larkana worth Rs 284.01 million to repair, renovate and rehabilitate streets, sewerage and drain works in the city under Larkana Development Package.
