Seminar promotes women’s induction in police

A seminar on “Promoting Induction of Women in Police” was held at the Hameed Nizami conference hall of Institute of Communication Studies on Thursday. The session, a part of Gender Responsive Policing (GRP) project, aimed at strengthening the Gender Crime Centre to combat violence against women.
Chung Police Training School (PTS) Chief Law Instructor Waseem Durrani was the chief guest of the event. The chief guest briefed the female attendees about the process of recruitment in police force and said a greater participation of women in police would help reduce the masculine outlook of the department. Encouraging women to join the police force, he said “Police uniform gives a sense of security not only to the female employees of the department but to their families as well.”
He said women’s induction in police would also help reduce violence against women in the society. Punjab University Gender Studies Department Director Dr Samar Fatima criticised social norms and taboos and said the society had wrongly considered women eligible only for teaching or medical fields. She said women could join any department as they were not less than men in any aspect
Superintendent of Police Shaheen and Legal Inspector Ayesha Khan shared their experiences of being a part of the Police Department with the attendees and urged the female students to join the department.
Railways Assistant Sub-Inspector Sobia Noreen and Motorway Police Sub-Inspector Saima Inam also shared their success stories, as police officers, with the students. GRP Media and Communication Manager Ali Mazhar said female complaint units had been set in Islamabad, Lahore and Mirpur and soon would be extended to the other cities. GRP project is a joint collaboration of the National Police Bureau (NPB) and German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and is funded by German Foreign Affairs Ministry.
